Class 2 Chapter 2 : Cognitive, Language, and LIteracy Development

Topic: Essential Questions
  • How Do Children Develop Cognitively?
  • How is Piaget’s Work Viewed Today?
  • How Did Vygotsky View Cognitive Development?
  • How did Bronfenbrenner View Development?
  • What are the connections from one theory to the next as related to curriculum? 
Goals:
  • For students to gain an understanding how children develop cognitively inclusive of brain development and cognitive stage theory, and to create interest in ways in which this theory relates to teaching today.
  • To make the connection between Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development as related to Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development and how it may apply to teaching.
  • To make a connection to Bronfenbrenner's Theory of Social Development in relation to Dr. Ogbu's Cultural Ecological Theory and how it may effect American Indian learners.  
Student Activity 1 Objective: After classifying organisms related to the Lakota story “The Great Race" graduate candidates will retell the story at 90%.

Learning Activity: With a partner provide some order to the list "A Place for Everything and Everything in Its Place". After this you and your partner read and summarize the story "The Great Race".  Place your summary in your Student Drop Box. 

Student Learning Activity 2 Objective: When given a list of organisms (A Place for Everything and Everything in Its Place", and after reading page 31 "How Development Occurs" graduate candidates will apply Piaget's Schema Development and identify the theoretical components in relation to Constructivism Theory at the 90%.  

Learning Activity: With a partner place some order to the organism list given, read page 31 of text. After relate to Piaget's understanding of schemes, adaptation, assimilation, accommodation, equilibration and new scheme development. In closing provide an appraisal in your student drop box that addresses the questions below:  

  • What were your processes as you placed order to the organism list?
  • In what ways does this relate to teaching and lesson development?
  • How does this relate to constructivism theory?

Student Learning Activity Objective 3: After reading page 47 "How Did Vygotsky View Cognitive Development" and viewing the video below graduate candidates will partner and create a critical appraisal of scheme development and how it relates to the zone of proximal development.


Learning Activity: With a partner read page 47 "How Did Vygotsky View Cognitive Development" and view the video above and place in the student drop box a professional correlation between Piaget's Cognitive Theory to that of Vygotsky.

Student Learning Activity 4: After reading page 42 of text “How Did Bronfenbrenner View Development” and viewing the video "Bronfenbrenner Ecological Theory" engage in dialogue with classmates about how this theory relates to what you see in your school and how it relates to Piaget and Vygosky's theories.

  • What has aroused your curiosity?
  • What direction will you be taking to enrich your learning related to the course content covered this evening?
Assignment:
  • Annotated Bibliography: Two or three annotated bibliographies related to the topic covered this evening. I have provided some Related Readings Below to assist you with this.  You may also use the text, or conduct your own related searches. This is due next week. See Writing the Annotated Bibliography under Writing and Videos. Email completed assignments to artfisher65@gmail.com
  •  Student Learning Activity 5 Assignment: (Multimedia Based Stage Theory Assignment) In relation to this topic, the annotated bibliographies as well as the chapter reading will assist in the development of your PowerPoint presentation, or research paper you choose to write. This assignment is not due until the 9th week. Although keep in mind through your annotations what will be included to reinforce your stance or position. (I will assist with this as the weeks follow)  
  • As you work on these assignments, annotations and PowerPoint, consider the following as related to the Essential Questions:
    • Introduce your topic through the use of scholarly works. This may include the course other or those listed below.
    • Produce your stance or your position on how you feel about the topic.  Support your stance with citation and reference.
    • Include interconnections between the theorist presented, Piaget, Vygotsky, and Bronfenbrenner. Support your stance/position from scholarly works. 
    • Be inclusive of the relationship with curriculum. How should the curriculum be cognicent of these theory?
