Class 1 Chapter 1: Educcational Psychology: A Foundation for Teaching

Goal:

• For graduate candidates to formulate a list of effective characteristics of teachers for American Indian learners.
• For graduate candidates to consider the many types of research which can be applicable to reservation schools.

Objective:

• When given the prompt what are the effective characteristics of teachers for American Indian learners graduate candidates will create a list of effective characteristics and compare those to the course text as well as what research articles define as effective characteristics of teachers for American Indian learners.
• When given a list of school action research projects, graduate students will select a project which will be beneficial for their schools and critically critique this work.  Their written critiques will receive a score of a B or better using the Article Critique Rubric. 

Student Activity 1:

• Warm-up Activity:  Think-Pair-N- Share based on this prompt - List characteristics of effective teachers.  Share you list with a partner and expand.  Once you have completed this please post your response in the student drop box within your name placed at the top of the blog.  Prepare to discuss.
• Compare your list to what the text book has defined as characteristics of effective teachers.  With your partner expand this list to include the characteristics of effective teachers for American Indian Learners.  Post this in your drop box.
• Conduct a search for scholarly research based on Effective Characteristics of Teachers for American Indian Learners.  Post your opinions in your student drop box.  Prepare to discuss.

Student Activity 2 and Assignment: At the end of this chapter, you should be able to: • Identify attributes of effective teachers • Describe the role of educational research in informing classroom practice • Describe the research methods used in educational psychology and the rationale for each • Discuss how you can become an intentional teacher

• Read pages 10-20 of text
• Identify the attributes of effective teachers.
• Describe the role of educational research in informing classroom practices.
• Visit the Madison Metropolitan School District site and determine an action research project which maybe something beneficial to your assigned school. Introduce and explain the research. 
• After selecting an action research, describe the research methods used (see text of methods used in educational psychology and rationalize your choice)
• Describe intentional teacher and how you can become one.  

 
This article critique will be evaluated using the  Article Critique Rubric found in the course Materials. 

• I encourage you to follow the Five Paragraph Essay also found in the video list as Assistance for Writing the Academic Essay You may need to modify the topic to include an Article Critique.
• I have also included a video, How to Write the Critique Essay  please view this for further assistance.
• This assignment is due next week - Class 2
